Winy Maas professor, ir ing, HAIA

Winy Maas graduated in 1984 from the RHSLT Boskoop in landscape architecture and continued his studies at Delft University of Technology. He concluded his degrees in architecture and urbanism in 1990 with honours. In 1991 he founded MVRDV together with Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. Working in the field of architecture for more than 15 years, the Rotterdam-based office has established itself in the Netherlands and far beyond. Experimental research projects and eye-catching architecture have earned MVRDV a position on the international scene of architecture. Winy Maas has held various positions as guest teacher and lecturers regularly in the Netherlands and abroad. Since 2005 he is linked as a researcher to Delft University of Technology, where he became a professor in architecture and urban design at the Faculty of Architecture in 2007. In 2008 he founded The Why Factory (T?F), the thinktank on future cities at Delft University of Technology, which he has since been the director of.

Ulf Hackauf dipl-ing, researcher, lecturer

Ulf Hackauf was educated as an architect in Germany and Denmark. Having graduated from the Technische Universität Braunschweig in 1999, he moved to the Netherlands to join (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects, where he worked as a project architect on large developments in Germany, Great Britain, Denmark and the Netherlands. He was responsible for design and execution of the ‘A.A.Heijmans van den Bergh’ Building of the University of Utrecht, which was honoured with the Rietveld Prize in 2007. From 2006 to 2008 he worked as project architect at Neutelings Riedijk Architecten. He opened his architecture and research practice ‘hackauf.com <http://www.hackauf.com>’ in 2008. Ulf Hackauf has taught at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Academie van Bouwkunst Rotterdam, Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and several international workshops. Since autumn 2007 he is a teacher and a researcher at T?F, focusing on the technical sociological aspects of innovation, resources and planning processes.

Tihamer Salij researcher, lecturer

Tihamér Salij studied fine arts at the Art Academy of Utrecht, and graduated as a sculptor with honours. He specialized in audio-visual communications at the Willem de Kooning Academy and architectural design at the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam. After receiving a stipend from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) he worked at MVRDV as a researcher and editor. Salij has held visiting and teaching appointments at numerous Academies and Universities worldwide. Since September 2007 he is affiliated to T?F at Delft University of Technology. Besides to his own research and design practice Space Intelligence Agency (SIA), Tihamér Salij is currently conducting research on the notion and experience of space and time in relation to the visualization of the human future with particular focus on the conception of Utopia, Paradise and the Ideal City.

Pirjo Haikola MA-Design, researcher, lecturer

Pirjo Haikola was educated as a product designer in Finland and recieved her Master’s degree in design at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006, under the direction of Droog Design founders Gijs Bakker and Renny Ramakers. As a designer, Haikola has extensive international experience, having worked for studios in Milan and Munich, and as a freelance designer in the Netherlands. Exhibitions include ‘Travels Through Paradise’ at Platform 21 in Amsterdam, ‘Conceptual Design in Context’ during the Dutch Design Week in October and ‘Master Pieces 2006’ at the Droog Design gallery in Amsterdam. Her work has also been featured in the press and several articles were published in magazines and on websites, including Icon magazine (UK), Eigen Huis & Interieur (NL), Pen (Japan) and Domus web (IT). Pirjo Haikola works as a researcher and lecturer at T?F since autumn 2007. She is a visiting lecturer at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki (UIAH) since 2006.

Alexander Sverdlov MA-Arch, researcher, lecturer

Alexander Sverdlov was educated in architecture at the Moscow Architectural Institute and the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam. From 2002 to 2007 he worked as an architect and project architect of large-scale projects at Neutelings Riedijk, West 8, Architecten Cie, and OMA/AMO. In 2007 he established his own design practice SVESMI (www.svesmi.eu) in Rotterdam. In recent years Alexander Sverdlov has won several awards in international competitions. He was a co-curator and a contributor to the Shrinking Cities project by the German Cultural Foundation, as well as to the International Biennale Rotterdam in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Alexander Sverdlov taught, lectured and was a guest juror at various schools in Europe, including Delft University of Technology, the Berlage Institute, Sheffield School of Architecture, AHO and ETH Zurich. At T?F Sverdlov’s research concerns the development of the resort and new forms of leisure.

Daliana Suryawinata PhD candidate, researcher

Daliana Suryawinata is a graduate of the Berlage Institute. After finishing her studies in 2005, she worked as an architect at OMA, West 8 and MVRDV. Her work has been published in Works of Young Indonesian Architects 1998-2002, Volume (April 2005) and KM3, and exhibited in Erasmus Huis Jakarta in 2002 and the Venice Biennale 2006. She designed an urban installation in Jakarta in 2003 sponsored by the JakArt programme. She has taught at the Berlage Institute, the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture, and Delft University of Technology. She is a member of Young Indonesian Architects, an architectural discussion forum in Jakarta. Daliana Suryawinata is currently working on a PhD-by-design project ‘Prosper(c)ity’ at T?F, a research group led by Winy Maas. Together with Florian Heinzelmann, she founded Suryawinata- Heinzelmann Architecture and Urbanism/SHAU in 2007. She is also curating a part of the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2009, ‘Open City: Reciprocity’.

Felix Madrazo researcher, lecturer

Felix Madrazo studied architecture at La Salle University in Mexico City. He obtained his Master’s degree in architecture from The Berlage Institute, Rotterdam. At 22, he won first prize in the national park competition ‘El Tepozteco’ in Mexico for architects under 35, organized by the magazine Arquine. He worked for Alberto Kalach, with whom he built the GGG house in Mexico City. After studying at the Berlage Institute, Madrazo obtained a fellowship at the Kulturstiftung/ Caracas Think Tank to do research on the informal city. In 2004 he joined OMA*AMO and worked as senior architect, researcher and editor on several projects (2004-2006). He is co-founder of Supersudaca – an urban think tank from Latin America (www. supersudaca.org). With Supersudaca, Madrazo won the Best Entry Award at the second International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam with research on Caribbean Tourism (2005). In 2006 he opened his own office IND [Inter National Design] in partnership with Arman Akdogan (www. internationaldesign.nl). IND/ Supersudaca won first prize at the International Competition on Social Housing in Ceuta, Spain. Felix Madrazo has lectured and taught at many universities worldwide.
